The painting of the Route 66 Shield on the Water Tower was first raised to the City in 2009 by the Historic 6th on Route 66 Association. With our water tower coming up for repainting in 2021-22, and the newly formed City Neighborhood Plan for San Jacinto being announced (2019) it seemed like a golden opportunity to present to the City of Amarillo, the possibility of having a Route 66 Shield painted on our water tower. The Historic 6th on Route 66 Association partnered with the San Jacinto Neighborhood Association (SJNA), and the Old Route 66 Association of Texas on this project in 2020.
