1930 Texaco
Super Service Station
This old Route 66 Super Service Station on the corner of Main and 3rd Street was the busiest corner in downtown Alanreed, Texas, when Bradley Kiser built this station in 1930. It's the corner where the original 1926-36 alignment of Route 66 came through Alanreed and turned to the west. Back then, if you were headed west, Alanreed was the last safe stop before the dreaded Jericho Gap, the 18-mile section of dirt Route 66 notorious for its deep muddy ruts where cars commonly got stuck.
A later alignment of Route 66 ran straight along 3rd Street. Which kept this station on route 66 all the way until its by passing in the 80’s from the opening of I 40. The station closed in 1982
The architecture of this gas station is unique. It has a red Spanish-style ceramic tile hip roof and sand-colored brick, combining Craftsman-style architecture with Spanish Eclectic. It was considered a very large gas station for 1930 with 4 pumps and 2 service bays . Hence the name 66 Super service station.
We need your help to Save the Super Service Station
The Old Route 66 Association of Texas helped restore this station in 1993. The station is in much need of another easy restoration. The roof is still in good shape just needs a few repairs and a new coat of paint. Most of the building just needs some hard cleaning and a fresh coat of paint inside and out . The grounds need quite a few trees removed and we are hoping to stabilize and somehow fix the front facade of the old garage bays also have the gas pumps repainted and refreshed . We need your help with donations to help fund this project. We want to once again preserve this piece of Texas Route 66 history for the next generations of travelers to enjoy. We would gladly accept donations of materials we need or even some good old sweat labor when it comes time. If you can’t do either of those, we ask if you would consider making a monetary donation to help with the restoration. Our goal is $7000 that should cover everything needed to be done Every penny donated will go to this project. Also keep in mind, even though Old Route 66 Association of Texas is a 501 c 3 Non Profit organization. We do not receive any state or federal funding. Everything we do is thru grass root efforts just like this.
