The First Phillips 66
Retail Outlet in Texas – 1928
This vintage 1928 gas service station, designed in “Cottage Fashion” and often called a “Doll House” opened for business in September of 1928
Phillips company records show this station in McLean is recognized as the first Phillips 66 station, approved to be built in the state of Texas. Its Tudor-Revival style construction with gabled roof and front chimney is typical of the early station brand. The McLean station officially closed for business in 1977.
In 1991 the station was owned by Wayne Bybee. Mr. Bybee donated the station to the McLean chapter of The Old Route 66 Association of Texas. In 1992 the Association completely restored the Phillips station and it became a must see picture opportunity along Route 66. In 2006 The Old Route 66 Association of Texas, presented the restored Phillips station to the city of McLean and with a unanimous decision from the city council and mayor, the city of McLean accepted the gift and have been great care takers since then.
We Need You Help to reach our goal
The picture above from 2006 was in the stations better days after being restored in 1992. Well 30 years of Mother Nature and Father Time, not to mention the harsh panhandle winds and weather. Have really taken its toll on the station. This is a picture of the station Today. The Old Route 66 Association of Texas is once again taking on the task of restoring the station 30 years after the first restoration. We need your help with donations to help fund the replacement of the roof, fix the mortar in between the bricks to help stabilize the building. Refurbish and paint the pumps and truck. We want to once again preserve this piece of Texas Route 66 history for the next generations of travelers to Enjoy. We would gladly accept donations of materials we need or even some good old sweat labor when it comes time. If you can’t do either of those, we ask if you would consider making a monetary donation to help with the restoration. Every penny donated will go to this project. Also keep in mind the Old Route 66 Association of Texas is a 501 c 3 Non Profit organization.
WE DID IT
Thanks to everyone who helped us reach our goal.
We did it. We saved the station once again for future generations of travelers to enjoy. Thank you goes out to OHM Restoration for Donating the roofing Materials. It looks awesome and still authentic . Thank you to the Brogdins at R and B Body Shop in Pampa for restoring the Gas pumps . They look Amazing. A BIG thank you to everyone who donated time or money to this project. We could not have accomplished it with out you. Although we didn’t raise enough to quite get everything we hoped to have done. The station looks good again, is stable and should stand for a very long time. Thank you to the City of Mclean and Mayor Tanner Hess for letting us come in and handle the restoration once again of this Texas jewel. A few touch paint ups are still needed . But once the weather warms up we will have it completed before tourist season starts.
